George Farish (1809 – November 1, 1836) was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, in 1809, the second son of Professor William Farish (1759–1837), a distinguished Jacksonian Professor of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, and Hannah Stephen (1767–1844), the daughter of James Stephen of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He grew up in an intellectually vibrant academic household alongside his siblings: Henry Farish, William Stephen Farish, James Farish, a surgeon and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, and William Milner Farish.
Continuing a strong family tradition of academic engagement at the university, George Farish was admitted as a pensioner to Queens' College, Cambridge, on December 15, 1827, and officially matriculated in January 1828. During his time at Cambridge, he became a member of the elite intellectual secret society known as the Cambridge Apostles, joining a distinguished circle of thinkers and contemporaries that included his brother James, who was also a member. After completing his undergraduate studies, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1832.
Following his graduation, Farish pursued legal training, being admitted to the Inner Temple on August 6, 1832. However, his academic and professional path remained closely tied to Cambridge. Later in the decade, he migrated to Trinity College on April 9, 1835, where he proceeded to a Master of Arts (MA) in 1835.
In his personal life, Farish became a father, though his promising career and life were cut short by declining health. Seeking relief, he undertook a journey to the milder climate of Madeira, Portugal. He passed away on November 1, 1836, at the age of 27 while on route to or upon arrival in Madeira, with his death subsequently noted in the Gentleman's Magazine in 1837.
